I think we can all agree that it’s nice to chill and watch a movie every now and then and what better way to top that off then by visiting the country that has been the host of many film masterpieces. With Ireland’s lush countryside and rugged landscape it has led to filmmakers rushing to be apart of the list of films shot on the Emerald Isle.
1.Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
The cliffs of Moher on the west coast of Ireland was the host for this film and it is easy to see why as the cliffs reach 214m and make the perfect backdrop for a scene in any movie. The Cliffs of Moher are the most visited attraction in Ireland today so it is not a surprise that they are used as the set of a phenomenal film.
2. Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi
This huge movie franchise claims Skellig Michel as the set for a scene in this movie. Skellig Michel is a small island off the coast of Kerry and can be seen from the ring of Kerry and if your lucky and take the hike up bray head you may catch a glimpse of this spectacular island and it’s beehive shaped stone buildings. The island dates back to the sixth century when a group of early Christian monks settled here. Tours can be taken to this amazing island between the months of May-September.
3. Braveheart
While the majority of this film was set in Scotland there were a few locations in Ireland that filmmakers felt would complete this movie. Scenes for this movie were filmed in Trim castle county Meath which is a castle that is over 840 years old. There were also clips in the movie shot in Dublin, Wicklow and Kildare. You can take a drive along the Braveheart trail and take a trip across the stunning Wicklow gap.
4. Ps I Love You
Ireland can be the perfect location for a romantic getaway and this movie shows just that it is set in the Wicklow mountains and shows displays of romantic boat scenes across some of Ireland most beautiful lakes.
5. Saving Private Ryan
Most people will agree that Saving Private Ryan is one the best war movies ever created that it is simply cinematic brilliance. Let’s just say some of that is down to some of the locations picked to film this movie as they are simply magnificent. There is one scene in tho film in which it shows soldiers storming the beach in Curracloe Co. Wexford.
